Just two days before Bayern Munich’s Champions League round-of-16 return leg against Atalanta, Manuel Neuer has resumed goalkeeper training, according to Munich-based outlet Merkur.
The 39-year-old, who suffered a calf fiber tear during his comeback match against Borussia Mönchengladbach on March 6, completed short sprints, performed agility drills and made ground-level saves – but did not perform any airborne dives.
The session, overseen by goalkeeper coach Michael Rechner and rehab coach Simon Martinello, appeared to be a test ahead of the Atalanta clash, which will most likely come too soon for Neuer.
Whether Jonas Urbig will be available is also uncertain. The 22-year-old missed Saturday’s 1-1 Bundesliga draw with Bayer Leverkusen after sustaining a concussion in the first leg against Atalanta. A decision on his availability for Wednesday is expected today, Monday.
With third-choice Sven Ulreich and fourth-choice Leon Klanac also sidelined, a young goalkeeper could get his chance if neither Neuer nor Urbig is deemed fit.
One possibility is 16-year-old Leonard Prescott, who has been on the bench for Bayern’s last two games against Atalanta and Bayer Leverkusen.
Another option is 19-year-old Jannis Bärtl, who has started the last six games for Bayern’s reserves in the Regionalliga this season.
