Manuel Neuer, 40, says the coming season is likely to be the last of his career. According to L'Équipe, he spoke in Rottach-Egern, south of Munich, where Bayern Munich are preparing for the campaign.

He extended his Bayern contract in spring until summer 2027, having joined the club in summer 2011 from Schalke 04. He recently announced his international retirement.

Neuer said he will not approach every game as if it might be his last. He added that it does not matter to him if he has perhaps visited certain stadiums for the final time by season’s end.

He said there was about an 85% chance he would have stopped in a year, but the quality of the squad and staff persuaded him to continue. The 2014 World Cup winner said the group and club structure made up the remaining 15%, and that this team can still compete for every title. He had taken time to reflect before signing in mid-May.

The goalkeeper missed time in February and March, then again in mid-May, with a left calf injury. Even so, he returned from international retirement to play at the 2026 World Cup, where Germany were eliminated in the round of 32 by Paraguay after a 1-1 draw and 3-4 on penalties. He then confirmed his international retirement again.
