Veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has once again ruled out any possibility of returning to the German national team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite rising calls for his comeback following Marc Andre ter Stegen’s back injury.

Neuer who turns 40 next year, retired from international football with conviction and he made clear on Saturday that nothing has changed.

"I retired with conviction because I want to focus on my career with the club"

Calls for his return surged across Germany in recent weeks, with fans and pundits urging the DFB to bring back the Bayern Munich legend as ter Stegen continues his recovery and remains yet to play match for Barcelona this season.

Germany’s current goalkeeping situation

With ter Stegen sidelined, Oliver Baumann of Hoffenheim has taken over during the qualifying campaign and helped Germany secure their place at the 2026 World Cup.

Baumann’s performances were solid but many supporters view Neuer’s experience as invaluable for major tournament especially with Germany aiming to bounce back after two disappointing World Cup campaigns in 2018 & 2022.
