Marc Guehi transfer collapse continues to haunt sorry Liverpool

No opposition player has done more damage to Liverpool this season than Marc Guehi.
On Saturday, the defender started for Manchester City as they beat the Reds 4-0 to advance to the semi-finals of the FA Cup. It is the fifth time he has faced them this term and the fifth time he has been on the winning side. That is one third of all their defeats in 2025/26.
The irony is not lost on anyone; Guehia was on the verge of joining Liverpool in a blockbuster move on Transfer Deadline Day last summer, but it fell through when Crystal Palace failed to secure a replacement. When he did eventually leave Selhurst Park, it was to join City in January.
Instead of forming an intimidating partnership with Virgil van Dijk, he has contributed to knocking Liverpool out of both cup competitions and two defeats in their flailing Premier League campaign, not to mention beating them in the Community Shield just weeks before the drama of Deadline Day.
“It’s not me! It’s just a coincidence to be honest,” Guehi modestly explained to TNT Sports after the final whistle.
“You have to enjoy it, it’s not a long career so that’s what I’m trying to do. At Man City it is relentless, having to learn a lot and make mistakes. I have been given the opportunity to do that with an amazing team, amazing manager and the fans have been great as well.”
There is no guarantee that signing Guehi would have meaningfully changed their season for the better, especially given how most of their new signings from last summer have failed to ignite. But it is one of the biggest What Ifs that has continually haunted them over the past seven months.
