Marc‑André ter Stegen will leave FC Barcelona temporarily to join FC Girona on loan for the remainder of the 2025–26 season, seeking more regular playing time ahead of the World Cup 2026.

The 33‑year‑old German goalkeeper has been a key figure at Barcelona since 2014, winning multiple La Liga titles and a Champions League trophy, but recent injuries and the emergence of younger options have limited his appearances this season.

Former Germany and current Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick confirmed the move, explaining that the club had “decided on a different path for the future.” He praised Ter Stegen as a “fantastic goalkeeper” and wished him well, while emphasizing that the loan benefits both player and club.

The deal will see Barcelona cover most of Ter Stegen’s wages, with Girona contributing a smaller share. A clause reportedly prevents him from playing against Barcelona this season. For Girona, the experienced keeper brings leadership and top-level quality to strengthen their squad as they aim to climb the La Liga table.

For Ter Stegen, the loan represents an opportunity to regain consistent minutes and prepare for Germany’s World Cup campaign. While leaving Barcelona is a significant change, it could be the perfect chance for him to return to full form on the pitch.
