Manchester United have suffered due to injuries to their backline, especially in the second half of the season.

Matthijs de Ligt has been unavailable since November, while Lisandro Martinez finally returned to action a couple of weeks ago, only to receive a straight red against Leeds that cost his team big time.

Apart from the duo’s defensive resilience, the Red Devils have also missed the Argentine‘s playmaking skills from the back.

Given their poor injury record, the 20-time English league champions cannot afford to place their trust in the aforementioned two, especially if they qualify for the Champions League next season.

Marcos Senesi fits Carrick’s system perfectly

They will need reinforcements in the summer if they are to challenge on all four fronts. However, given their need to spend big to solve their midfield woes, INEOS might not have too much money left over to address this issue in defence.

This explains United’s interest in Bournemouth centre-back Marcos Senesi, whose contract expires after the current campaign concludes, and his strengths fit Michael Carrick‘s system like a glove.

The Argentine is left-footed and is phenomenal when it comes to spraying passes from deep, making him the perfect replacement for Martinez. The 28-year-old is no slouch when it comes to defending either.

Tottenham Hotspur were reportedly in advanced talks with the Argentina international, but their Premier League status hangs by a thread. Hence, other suitors like United and Liverpool still have a shot, as revealed by CaughtOffside.

United remain alive in the race for Marcos Senesi

“Senesi has attracted interest from Spurs, who have indeed touched base with his representatives over a potential free transfer this summer. The Argentine is close to being a free agent as he’s decided he won’t sign a new contract at Bournemouth.

“Sources in the industry said that Tottenham are indeed “in advanced talks” over signing Senesi, but nothing can be fully agreed until the club know if they’ll still be in the Premier League next season.

“It may be that Senesi is leaning towards Spurs if they stay up, but my understanding is that other clubs like Liverpool remain in the race for his signature.

“Senesi is one name they like, as is Juventus defender Pierre Kalulu. Both players are also on the radar of Manchester United as they’re another club in the market for someone in that position.”

As things stand, the North London club still trail West Ham by two points in their quest to avoid the drop. That means United are well within touching distance of pulling off a deal for the “outstandingMarcos Senesi.
