Manchester United have received a boost in their pursuit of Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi.
Over the weekend, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming United are in “close contact” with the agents of Senesi, who is set to leave the Cherries on a free transfer upon the expiration of his contract in June.
Now, reports in Italy shed more light on Senesi‘s plans amid growing interest in his services.
According to journalist Mirko Di Natale (via Sport Witness), Marcos Senesi wants to remain in the Premier League, with Manchester United, Liverpool, and Tottenham Hotspur in the running for his signature.
Di Natale expects “concrete updates” concerning the Argentinian defender’s future in the next few days.
Tuttosport have their own separate report on the transfer battle, underlining that the Premier League clubs are in “pole position” to sign Senesi.
Juventus initially considered the 28-year-old as one of their primary targets ahead of next season and even made an offer.
However, the Serie A giants are now out of the race, barring any last minute twist.
The highly regarded left-footed central defender has emerged as a very appealing target, owing to his soon-to-be free agent status and Premier League experience.
Following the departures of Illia Zabarnyi and Dean Huijsen last summer, Senesi stepped up brilliantly to lead Bournemouth’s backline, and his stock has risen rapidly since. He has been described as a ‘gladiator’.
The technically secure six-foot-tall defender most recently impressed with his resilient performance at the Emirates, helping Bournemouth pick up all three points against league leaders Arsenal.
Quality left-footed centre-backs are a rare commodity in football. Given Senesi’s skill sets and experience, United should definitely make a strong push for his signing, especially considering Lisandro Martinez‘s worrying fitness record.
