Marcus Rashford’s chances of staying at Manchester United this summer have increased.

According to The Athletic, the forward’s £40 million exit clause in his contract at United has expired, which means any sale will now need to be negotiated.

Rashford is currently on World Cup duty with England, who are scheduled to meet France in the third-place play-off on Saturday after the semi-final loss to Argentina

He has started two of England’s seven matches at the tournament, and scored a goal after coming on as a substitute against Croatia.

Rashford is expected to return to United for pre-season after a three-week holiday following the World Cup.

The 28-year-old spent last season on loan at Barcelona after falling out of favour at Old Trafford.

He impressed with his performances in Spain, scoring 14 goals in 49 appearances across all competitions.

Barcelona opted against triggering the £26m option to sign him permanently. They signed his England teammate Anthony Gordon in a deal worth £69m.

Rashford has made no secret of his desire to rejoin Barca, but a return looks unlikely.

The 28-year-old is regarded as one of the brightest talents to come through United’s academy. However, he hasn’t played for the club since December 2024.
