Marcus Rashford’s dreams of sealing a permanent transfer to Barcelona are in danger of collapsing following a new stunning development.
Rashford’s fortunes have dramatically improved since he was kicked out of United by Ruben Amorim and joined Barcelona on a season-long loan.
He fell out of favour under the now-sacked Portuguese coach and was subsequently allowed to leave to maintain squad harmony.
The Carrington academy graduate has been key to Barcelona’s push to retain their La Liga title. So far this season, Rashford has managed an impressive four goals and eight assists in 21 top-flight appearances. He has notched 10 goals and 13 assists across all competitions.
There have been rumours that the Blaugrana are already planning for the future with Rashford in mind. Club boss Hansi Flick has repeatedly expressed his admiration for the forward in public.
Rashford himself has reaffirmed his desire to carry on with the Catalan giants. There had been suggestions that Michael Carrick will look to bring him back to Old Trafford if he is given the head coach position on a permanent basis, but Rashford is thought to view his chapter at United as over.
The situation is certainly shaping up to be an interesting one ahead of the summer window and now, there has been a fresh twist.
According to The Times, there is a possibility that Rashford’s move to Barcelona could fail to materialise, depending on the outcome of this year’s presidential elections.
The Times say that Rashford’s Barcelona future could “face a sudden collapse” if the presidential elections don’t pan out in Joan Laporta’s favour.
A deal for Rashford is a key agenda item of Laporta’s bid for re-election. If he fails to get another term, there is a chance that Rashford will not be a Barcelona player once the season concludes.
Fortunately for the United loanee, Laporta is seen as the favourite to win the presidency and extend his tenure.
This is undoubtedly a developing situation that United supporters will be watching closely. Meanwhile, Carrick and his players return to action on Tuesday when they go away to West Ham.
