Enzo Maresca praised his Chelsea players after they edged past League One side Lincoln with a 2-1 victory in the Carabao Cup.

Chelsea came into the match under pressure, having gone three games without a win in all competitions. They were desperate to respond.

The home crowd were given hope when Lincoln took a shock lead in the 42nd minute. Rob Street punished an error from Enzo Fernandes to score.

Chelsea responded quickly after the break. Tyrique George struck from the edge of the box in the 48th minute to level the match.

Two minutes later, Facundo Buonanotte found the net to complete the turnaround and give the Blues a lead they held until the end.

Manager highlights tough challenge

Speaking to Sky Sports, Maresca admitted it was not an easy night for his side, praising Lincoln for their strong and determined display.

“We changed something tactically, but we found a goal immediately that was good for us,” he said.

“But I have to praise the team, because it was a very tricky game away. Long balls inside the box, free-kicks, throw-ins and the way they defended was outstanding. We win and we are happy.”

The Chelsea manager explained that the game was important for his younger players, many of whom had never faced League One opposition before.

“It was a bit better. We had four or five or six players on the pitch who had never played in this type of game,” he added.

Focus now on Brighton test

Maresca also singled out Tyrique George for praise, highlighting his growing importance after already featuring in recent matches against Manchester United and Fulham.

“We already gave Tyrique George last year some confidence. This year, even Manchester United and Fulham in the second half, he is playing games and helping us,” Maresca said.

The Italian manager admitted it had been a tough week for the squad but believes the win could provide a platform for improvement.

“This week has been tough in terms of results. Now we go again,” he added.

Chelsea will now shift focus to their Premier League clash against Brighton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, 27 September.
