Man United’s Cunha Countdown: Goldbridge Predicts Deal and Slams Transfer Rumours

The latest episode of The United Stand, featuring Mark Goldbridge, was charged with anticipation, speculation and a familiar hint of exasperation. As Manchester United approach the Europa League final, the focus is not just on silverware but also the club’s looming business in the transfer market, most notably involving Wolves forward Matheus Cunha.

Cunha Deal Edging Closer

Goldbridge was adamant that a major signing is imminent. “I think it’s a huge week for Manchester United and I wouldn’t be surprised if we win the trophy and sign Cunha by the weekend,” he declared confidently. Citing journalist Fabrizio Romano’s recent updates, Goldbridge suggested the timeline has been carefully managed by the club following unexpected European progression. “Two or three weeks ago Fabrizio says we’ve got a here we go very soon coming with Cunha… Then we beat Bilbao and get to a final – United quite rightly have gone, ‘this is a big positive we don’t actually need yet.’”

He believes the announcement is a matter of timing, not uncertainty. “We’re just waiting until after Wednesday… if we lose the Europa League final, we pull it out. If we win, we pull it out.”

No Hijack Expected

Despite ongoing transfer chatter, Goldbridge shut down any notion of outside interference in the Cunha deal. “I’m absolutely convinced he’s going to be a United player and there is absolutely no chat about anybody swooping in and hijacking that deal.”

He hinted the delay may also be tactical from Wolves, saying, “Wolves are done, he knows he’s leaving… they’re going to get good money out of it.”

Frustration Over Zirkzee Rumours

Switching gears, Goldbridge expressed strong frustration over renewed speculation linking Joshua Zirkzee with a move away from Old Trafford. “Why has all this started up again?” he asked, referring to a reported loan bid from Inter Milan. “This is the most uninteresting story out there… Zirkzee’s committed himself to Man United.”

He suggested the noise around the Dutch forward may stem from agents stirring things up. “Between August and Christmas it was every bloody day an Italian club looking at him… now it’s starting up again.”

Dismissing the story as baseless, Goldbridge fumed, “Can we just shut this down? Somebody at United needs to say, ‘Look, let’s just shut this down. Let’s get Zirkzee to come out and say I’m not going anywhere.’”

He also reinforced the forward’s value to United’s setup. “I think Amorim needs options in the number 10 and Zirkzee gives him options there… it just sounds complete nonsense to me.”

Concerns Over Garnacho’s Role

Finally, Goldbridge touched on a more delicate issue — the development of Alejandro Garnacho. He admitted uncertainty over the Argentine’s future if he is benched for the final: “I’ve always said I’m 50/50 about Garnacho leaving Man United… if he doesn’t start the final, I can see him going.”

He highlighted the risk in United’s handling of a young talent who has already made a big impact. “What he could be at 22… it could be a mistake for United… I’d 100% want a sell-on clause in it because God knows where he could end up.”
