Inter President Beppe Marotta insists that the Stadio Meazza must be ‘torn down and rebuilt’ like Wembley Stadium as the city of Milan is becoming ‘marginal in the football landscape.’

Marotta already sent a warning about a new stadium for Inter and Milan on Sunday night and discussed the same matter on Monday morning in an interview with Radio Anch’Io lo Sport.

“Milan is one of the most attractive cities in Europe, and Milan and Inter represent two of its excellences. Nevertheless, the city risks becoming marginal in the football landscape. It can no longer host a Champions League Final, and it won’t be among the host cities for the 2032 Euros,” said the Inter President, via TMW.

“San Siro must be respected, it has been the stage for incredible emotions and represents the history of both clubs. But we have to look forward. It is an outdated structure in constant need of maintenance. Wembley was torn down and rebuilt, and here, too, there is a strong need to do the same.”

Inter and Milan have reached an agreement to buy the San Siro area from the City of Milan, and they plan to demolish 91% of the iconic Stadio Meazza to build a new co-owned stadium nearby.

“We would like to build a stadium near San Siro. We are talking about private investments, financed by the two clubs. It would bring great benefit to the city in terms of infrastructure, jobs and tourism,” Marotta said.

“Right now, we are not competitive in Europe. Milan and Inter have each earned about €80m [from stadium], while in Europe, some clubs make €300m. This gap has a negative effect in terms of competitiveness. In the last 10 years, 153 stadiums have been built, while in Italy, only three have been renovated, just 1%. We urgently need a new stadium.”

It is reported that the new stadium’s capacity will be around 71,000.

“The capacity reflects the European average,” Marotta said.

“There is great respect for the fans who represent both the middle and working class, and the attendance must always be guaranteed through affordable ticket prices. At the same time, modern features must be enhanced, such as Skyboxes and commercial facilities.”

The Nerazzurri executive also spoke about Inter’s results on the pitch this season.

The Serie A giants have six points in four league games and beat Sassuolo 2-1 on Sunday.

“We need to be patient. We are still in a transitional phase in the league. It’s just round four. We need to remain very calm. There has been a change of coach and, naturally, there may be some difficulties that weren’t in the last years,” Marotta said.

“We are convinced that the culture of hard work will be enough to put us back where we rightly want to be.”

Francesco Pio Esposito, a product of the Inter academy, made his Serie A debut as a starter last night.

“We are very pleased to have launched two products of our academy. Chivu spent six years in our youth sector, winning two national titles with the Primavera,” Marotta concluded.

“At the same time, we have a young player who grew up in our academy. This is something that makes us very proud. It is often said that clubs do not have the courage to promote young players, but I think that even the biggest clubs are now following this path.
