John Mousinho could depart Portsmouth for Bristol City, but could former QPR boss Marti Cifuentes be the answer for Pompey?

Interest from Bristol City in John Mousinho could yet leave Portsmouth facing an uncomfortable managerial dilemma this summer, but could former QPR boss Marti Cifuentes provide the answer?

Inarguably, John Mousinho has done an excellent job at Fratton Park. He guided Pompey back into the Championship after years outside of English football's top two tiers. He has also helped stabilise the club at second-tier level despite financial limitations compared to many rivals.

Naturally, that work over the last three seasons has not gone unnoticed. Bristol City have had eyes on Mousinho for a while, with it also stated that other clubs could join Bristol City in the race to bring Mousinho in this summer.

Some may argue that he has taken Portsmouth as far as he can, which will leave the club requiring a replacement. Should Mousinho depart, though, Portsmouth could do far worse than turn towards former Queens Park Rangers boss Marti Cifuentes as a replacement.

Cifuentes left QPR last summer before an underwhelming spell this term with Leicester City, where expectations and stylistic demands arguably never suited him. Leicester were a club expected to dominate possession, control matches territorially, and overwhelm opponents through sheer squad quality.

Cifuentes’ strengths as a coach arguably lend themselves more naturally to underdog environments, such has been the situation with Portsmouth in each of the last two campaigns under Mousinho. The same was true of Cifuentes' QPR side as well.

Out of possession structure, off-ball organisation, and the ability to break quickly and effectively are prioritised over relentless front-foot domination. That is precisely why Portsmouth could represent a much better fit if Mousinho departs for Bristol City, with the players for it in attacking areas.

Josh Murphy being one such example of a player Cifuentes would love. Then, there is the side of this with younger players as well. At QPR, Cifuentes earned plenty of praise for improving players individually while building a competitive side under difficult circumstances.

Could a player like Adrian Segecic also benefit? Arguably so. On top of that, financial restrictions, squad imbalance, and limited room for manoeuvre in the transfer market are not unfamiliar territory to him. Pompey’s comparatively cautious budget therefore would not necessarily become a major obstacle if he arrived at Fratton Park.

In many ways, that practical experience makes him an appealing candidate. Portsmouth are ambitious, but they are also realistic about their current standing since their return to the Championship landscape. They are unlikely to compete financially with parachute-payment clubs or sides receiving significant external investment.

They need to build slowly and in a calculated manner, which is what Mousinho has been happy to oversee so far. It means intelligent coaching and recruitment of undervalued and underappreciated assets remain vital; Cifuentes has already shown he can work effectively within those constraints.

Marti Cifuentes would be a great stylistic fit for Portsmouth

In truth, one of the biggest reasons is that his tactical approach should also suit Portsmouth’s squad profile. He generally favours compact and organised teams capable of pressing aggressively in moments without becoming overly expansive or vulnerable defensively.

In the Championship, where physical intensity often dictates outcomes, that style can be extremely effective over a long season. Importantly, appointing somebody like Cifuentes would still feel like an ambitious move despite his struggles at Leicester.

Managers do not suddenly become poor coaches because one job fails to click stylistically. Plenty of supporters would recognise the context surrounding his time there and appreciate why Portsmouth may actually provide a stronger platform for him to succeed. It could and should look more akin to his QPR side.

Of course, Pompey fans will not want to lose Mousinho in the first place. He has rebuilt optimism around the club and developed a strong connection with supporters. However, if Bristol City eventually prise him away, Portsmouth may need to act decisively. Cifuentes could be exactly the sort of smart, forward-thinking appointment to replace him.
