Gabriel Martinelli produced a moment of late drama as Brazil fought back to defeat Japan 2-1 and secure their place in the World Cup last 16.
With the game seemingly drifting towards extra time, Brazil struck in the sixth minute of stoppage time. A turnover on the edge of the Japanese penalty area proved decisive, as Bruno Guimarães quickly fed Martinelli, who composed himself before steering a low effort in off the post to complete the turnaround.
Japan had earlier stunned the five-time world champions with a well-taken opener in the 29th minute. Kaishu Sano seized upon a loose pass from Danilo, drove forward with purpose and calmly finished beyond Alisson to give his side a deserved first-half lead.
Brazil struggled to impose themselves before the break but responded strongly after half-time. Their pressure told in the 56th minute when Casemiro rose to meet Gabriel Magalhães’ cross, powering a header beyond Zion Suzuki to bring the contest level.
Momentum shifted firmly towards Brazil, who went close to turning the game around almost immediately. Vinícius Júnior produced a dazzling run through the Japanese defence, but Suzuki reacted superbly to push his effort onto the post.
Japan continued to defend with organisation and discipline, limiting clear chances as Brazil pressed. However, their resistance was finally broken in heartbreaking fashion when Ao Tanaka was dispossessed late on, allowing Martinelli to deliver the decisive blow.
Brazil now progress to the knockout stage, while Japan are left to reflect on a spirited but ultimately painful defeat.
