Spurs are held to 1-1 draw away to Rangers in Europa League

After eight minutes, Spurs had their first chance of the game, but Werner’s curling effort from the left hand side was wayward. Ninety seconds or so later, Rangers sprung a quick counter, forcing a fingertip save from Forster after an effort from the right hand side.

25 minutes in, a nice Rangers move lead to a really inviting cross from the left hand side, but fortunately nobody could get on the end of it to turn it in. Quite the let off for Spurs.

The sides would go into the bream goalless. Got to be honest, that was not one for the neutrals. For better or worse, games under Ange have been very entertaining — at least for neutrals — but that was a rare dull half.

At half-time, Ange looked to his bench— introducing Kulusevski for Werner, to try and give his side a bit more creativity and guile. He would play off the right, with Johnson moving over to the left.

Not even 90 seconds into the second half, Rangers took the lead. A ball over the top from Tavernier was taken first time, finding the bottom corner. Really poor marking from Porro.

Eight minutes into the second half, a Kulusevski cutback was fired over by Johnson, with the ball slightly behind him as he took the shot.

After an hour, Ange introduced Solanke, Sarr and Bergvall— who replaced Johnson, Bentancur, and Bissouma.

Midway through the second half, a Maddison cross inadvertently found Porro, whose shot from an angle was saved. Another half chance, without being clear cut. Soon after, Dragusin was in the book for a cynical foul.

With a quarter of an hour remaining, Spurs were back level. Kulusevski slipped the ball through to Solanke, who tried to lay the ball off to Maddison, who got flattened — but that meant the ball rolled back to Kulusevski, who scored with a well taken finish.

With five minutes to go, incredible work from Dessers put himself in on goal, but he was denied by Forster, somehow. A minute later, the same player had the ball in the net, but was offside.

With less than a minute, a cross from Maddison was met by Solanke, but his effort was tame and straight at Butland who could easily collect the ball.

That would be that, and Spurs would head back down South with a point. The performance for 70 minutes was god awful. The last 20 were a bit better, but even in that period - Rangers had the best chance of the game, and Forster had to once again save the day.

This result leaves things very much where they were. Heading into the game, Rangers were 8th and Spurs were 9th with 10 points each. After the game, Rangers are 8th and Spurs are 9th with 11 points each. The only difference is Ange's side are now one game closer to a two legged play-off tie.

Tonight's game was the final European game week until January. Full focus turns to the Premier League and the domestic cups, starting from Southampton on Sunday.
