Matheus Costa was sacked then swiftly reinstated by Guarani and will lead the side against Santos on Sunday 18 at 20:30 at the Brinco de Ouro da Princesa in the third round of the Paulistão.

The coach was dismissed on Wednesday 14, then received a call hours later from the Bugre. Diario Do Peixe reports the U-turn put him back in charge for the weekend.

Businessman Roberto Graziano, an investor, drove the U-turn, judging it early in the state campaign. Elano had been lined up as interim. Guarani have drawn with Primavera and lost to Novorizontino.

Costa was already under pressure. Hired late in Serie C, he took Guarani to the final stretch but not to promotion. His record stands at 13 matches, five wins, four draws and four defeats.

Elano, Guarani’s technical coordinator since last year and a Santos idol, won Brazilian titles in 2002 and 2004 and the club’s third Libertadores in 2011. He lifted the Paulista in 2011 and 2012, playing 322 games and scoring 68 goals.

After retiring in late 2016, he joined Santos’s staff and served as caretaker for nine matches, posting five wins, one draw and three defeats. In 2017, after Levir Culpi’s exit, he led the team until the end of the Brasileiro, when Santos finished third.

As a head coach he faced Santos in 2020 with Internacional de Limeira at Vila Belmiro, losing 2-0 to two Raniel goals. He later coached Figueirense, Náutico and Ferroviária, and worked as a pundit before Guarani’s offer.
