Manchester United star Matheus Cunha has opened up on his early days at the club, revealing one of the most surprising things he has discovered.
Heading into the summer transfer window, bolstering the attacking department was United’s top priority, and they kicked off these plans by snapping up Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
United forked out £62.5m to secure the Brazilian’s highly sought-after signature.
While he hasn’t opened his goalscoring account for United, Cunha has enjoyed a superb start to life at United. He has caught the eye with his sensational ball-carrying and dribbling, which has been instrumental in pushing the team higher up the pitch.
Cunha has gone close to scoring multiple times, suggesting it’s only a matter of time before he finally gets off the mark.
The 26-year-old spoke to Globo Esporte, reflecting on his time at United. He highlighted the club’s massive public profile and media attention as a surprise, noting that it has placed him on a bigger stage where more people can watch and appreciate his game.
Cunha said, “What I was searching for as a person more than anything else, I’m slowly finding. You constantly want to improve; that’s innate in human nature, but I can’t help but stop and enjoy this moment.”
“Feeling privileged to wear the jersey of the greatest national team in the world, one of the greatest clubs in the world… It’s a spectacular personal moment. I have an incredible family, another little girl now, everyone is doing well and healthy. I’m enjoying all of this in a positive way.”
Asked whether he recognises that the move to United has transformed his public image, Cunha answered, “Without a doubt. It makes it easier for them to follow the games too, right? (laughs) United’s games are shown more on Brazilian television. I left the country very young, and being able to watch them more often during the week definitely connects me with them (the fans).”
“United is a club with many Brazilian fans. Everything you mentioned is of utmost importance. I was very happy at Wolves. The moment I arrived there right after not having made it to the World Cup, and the club was what I needed to remind me how great I had become within my possibilities, how caring the club was towards me.”
“Helping in the best way possible was very important; they also helped me, and I was able to reciprocate. Among records and goals, what made me most proud was reciprocating the affection.”
Cunha also opened up on his preferred position. He explained that, although known as a striker, he is more versatile and can be used in several positions, including midfield, where he mainly operates for United.
“I came to the national team with this stereotype of a number 9 shirt. I play my entire base as a midfielder, and when I became a professional, I encountered this world of 4-3-3. It seems like you have to adapt: either play center forward, winger, or eight.”
“They eliminated the midfielder position, and you have to adapt. But I see it positively, as it has given me experience, many more positions, and even more so in short-term tournaments with the national team. Having a versatile player is a huge help for any coach.”
Cunha and United are back in action on Sunday when they make their way to Anfield to face Liverpool.
