Matt Doherty leaves Wolves a modern-day club legend after 13 years, departing as a free agent. According to ExpressAndStar.com, the Irishman was not offered a new contract and sits 16th on the club’s all-time appearance list with 389 across two spells.
Signed from Bohemians for £75,000 in 2010, he helped take Wolves from League One to the Europa League.
In their first season back in the Premier League he scored eight and supplied 10 assists, with a key contribution at Newcastle on 9 December 2018. Diogo Jota’s drive forced a save and Doherty arrived at the back post to head a 94th-minute winner in a 2-1 victory.
On 7 April 2019 at Wembley, Wolves surrendered a 2-0 lead to Watford in the FA Cup semi-final and missed the final. Doherty had earlier produced a first-half highlight, timing his far-post run from a short corner to nod in from close range.
The following campaign he was involved in another 12 goals, highlighted by a famous night against Manchester City on 27 December 2019. City goalkeeper Ederson was sent off early, Raheem Sterling put the visitors 2-0 up, then Adama Traore struck before setting up Raul Jimenez to level.
Doherty then exchanged passes with Jimenez and finished left-footed to clinch an 89th-minute winner. He departs with 33 goals and 41 assists, and a reputation as a model professional on and off the pitch.
