Matt Doherty has left Wolves after 13 years, not offered a new contract and departing as a free agent. The Irishman made 389 appearances across two spells, placing him 16th on the club’s all-time list.
According to ExpressAndStar.com, he joined for £75,000 from Bohemians in 2010 and helped carry the club from League One to the Europa League. His time in old gold delivered a string of defining moments.
At Wembley in April 2019, he headed Wolves in front against Watford, arriving at the far post from a short-corner routine. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side later let a 2-0 lead slip and missed the FA Cup final.
In Wolves’ first season back in the Premier League he scored eight and provided 10 assists, underlining his status as one of the division’s most dangerous wing-backs.
He contributed to another 12 goals the following campaign, capped by the 89th-minute winner against Manchester City on 27 December 2019. After Ederson’s early red card, Raheem Sterling struck twice to make it 2-0, Adama Traore pulled one back then set up Raul Jimenez to level, before Doherty exchanged passes with Jimenez and finished left-footed.
In December 2018 he delivered a 94th-minute winner at Newcastle, nodding in after Diogo Jota’s run and shot were parried. The celebrations from players and staff underlined the surge of Wolves’ top-flight return.
Doherty finishes with 33 goals and 41 assists for the club. A model professional off the pitch, he leaves a substantial legacy at Molineux.
