While often he’s speaking specifics about transfers, players and behind the scenes gossip from the club, this time he was being a little more philosophical, looking at the model which have Chelsea have employed under their new ownership and the reaction to it from the wider footballing world:

“People don’t like this trading sort of model. I think it makes people uncomfortable and the speed at which they [Chelsea] are prepared to trade people, but it does give them an awful lot of leeway,” the journalist mused.

Chelsea heading towards another £500m summer – the new normal

“If you take into account the deals that Chelsea had set up for this summer, along with the signings they’ve made, they’re going to be getting towards a £300m summer, which people will latch on to. But what you also can say is, if you look down the sales they’ve made, and the projected sales, that’s probably going to come in over £200m as well,” Law continued.

“So they’re going to have traded over and above the 500 million mark in terms of ins and outs, I’d imagine this summer, which is astonishing, but it works for them.”

We should be used to it by now, but even we still get caught out by things like the Noni Madueke sale to Arsenal. Selling am important first team regular to your league rivals would just never have happened a few years ago, but now it’s par for the course.

We sympathise with those who don’t like it, but it has its benefits, as Law says.
