Maurice Louis-Dreyfus has sent a heartfelt message to Sunderland supporters after Europa League qualification, adding a cheeky nod at Newcastle.

Régis Le Bris’ side finished seventh in their first season back in the Premier League, securing the club’s first European campaign since 1973-74. He said in a post on Instagram that the achievement capped a huge team effort, and he thanked everyone involved.

He reflected on staying up, a top-10 finish and Europa League qualification, and dedicated the post-match scenes to the fans, saying they deserved it.

His reference to visitors in the message appeared to be a playful nod to Newcastle, with Sunderland beating them home and away this season.

Sunderland were promoted via the Championship play-offs, with many expecting a relegation fight. Instead they surged to Europe within four years of being in League One, prompting emotional celebrations across Wearside among players, staff, supporters and owners.
