Melker Ellborg has been left out of Sweden’s World Cup squad after Graham Potter, one of the first head coaches to do so, confirmed his 26 earlier this week, according to Sunderland Echo.
Ellborg, uncapped at senior level, was drafted in earlier this year after Robin Roefs’ injury opened the door at Sunderland, with some of Potter’s options also sidelined. Roefs is back in the XI and Potter has favoured experience.
AIK’s former Swansea City goalkeeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt is joined by Viktor Johansson of Stoke City and Jacob Widell Zetterstrom of Derby County. Nordfeldt returned for the March play-offs and looks the most likely number one this summer.
Sunderland will nevertheless have strong representation at the tournament. Granit Xhaka, Omar Alderete, Habib Diarra and Nilson Angulo are regulars for Switzerland, Paraguay, Senegal and Ecuador, who have all qualified, and if fit they are certainties for their national squads.
Sadiki is a DR Congo regular and will remain so if fit, while Robin Roefs could be selected by the Netherlands.
Chemsdine Talbi started for Morocco in a friendly on Tuesday and, having been in their recent AFCON squad, seems likely to travel this summer. Wilson Isidor will also travel after choosing Haiti, debuting and scoring his first goal during this window.
Simon Adingra and Arthur Masuaku could also feature for Ivory Coast and DR Congo respectively, though there is some doubt over whether they will still be Sunderland players by the summer.
