Memphis Depay has become the first player from a Brasileirão club selected to represent a European nation at a World Cup, after the Corinthians forward was named in Ronald Koeman's Netherlands squad for 2026.
According to Meu Timao, the Netherlands are in Group F and open against Japan on 14 June at 17:00 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, then face Sweden on 20 June at 14:00 at NRG Stadium in Houston, before meeting Tunisia on 25 June at 20:00 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. All matches are in the United States.
Corinthians plan to release Depay after Wednesday's game against Platense at Neo Química Arena in the Libertadores group stage. The Dutch squad are due to report to the KNVB training centre in Zeist on 30 May, when World Cup preparations begin.
With Depay on the final 26-man list, Fernando Diniz will be without him for the trip to Grêmio on Saturday, 30 May at 17:30 in Rio Grande do Sul, the club's last outing before the World Cup stoppage.
His selection is the 29th World Cup call-up for Corinthians players and he is only the fifth foreigner to represent the club at the tournament, after Carlos Gamarra and Freddy Rincón in 1998, and Javier Mascherano and Carlos Tévez in 2006. If not cut before the start of the competition, he would become the 25th to play while at the club. Baltazar, Gilmar, Roberto Rivellino and Ricardinho played in two editions each for Brazil.
FIFA will pay clubs $11,000 per day per player at the tournament. Corinthians are guaranteed $132,000 for 14 to 25 June, rising to $396,000 if the Netherlands reach the 19 July final. The club also expect around $165,000 for the training period from 30 May, approximately R$ 835,000.
