Lionel Messi scored a brace as Inter Miami sealed a thrilling 3-2 victory against Colorado Rapids on Saturday.

It marked the first victory for new manager Guillermo Hoyos, who replaced Javier Mascherano a few days ago.

Mascherano stunned the fans with a shock departure on Tuesday, just four months after leading the club to its first MLS Cup title.

However, Miami began the new era under Hoyos with an excellent win against Colorado.

Messi, who currently leads the scoring charts for the Herons, delivered a breakthrough in the 13th minute when he converted a penalty kick.

The hosts dominated possession but failed to create many clear-cut chances.

Miami doubled their advantage just before the break, with German Berterame heading home from close range.

Colorado initiated a comeback early in the second half, as Rafael Navarro produced a moment of magic to reduce the deficit.

Matt Wells then brought Darren Yapi off the bench, and he made an immediate impact.

Yapi finished superbly past the goalkeeper after being set up by Lucas Herrington.

However, Messi produced a spectacular winner 10 minutes from time. The Argentine dribbled into the box and struck a rising shot that slipped inside the back post.

The game ended on a sour note as Yannick Bright was sent off for using foul and abusive language towards the officials.

Miami return to action on Wednesday when they visit Real Salt Lake.
