Lionel Messi had a goal and assisted on another as Inter Miami won its first game at Nu Stadium with a 2-0 victory over the Portland Timbers. German Berterame also scored for Inter Miami, which had three draws and a loss at its new 26,000-seat stadium before Sunday's victory.
Messi opened the scoring with his 13th goal of the season in the 31st minute. Luis Suárez sent a pass inside to Telasco Segovia, who flicked a pass on to Messi, who beat Portland goalkeeper James Pantemis from 12 yards. Inter Miami padded the lead on Berterame's goal in the 42nd minute. Messi dribbled past two defenders and centered to Berterame, who converted inside the left post.
Through 14 matches, Inter Miami has found the back of the net 33 times, with Messi directly involved in 18 of those tallies by racking up 13 goals and five assists. While nine other players have cracked the scoresheet for Miami this season, Berterame is the next closest with just five goals, highlighting the team's extreme dependence on their superstar captain.
However, during the 2026 MLS campaign, his influence has reached a point where the Herons are heavily reliant on what the Argentine legend can produce on any given night. This level of dependence creates structural vulnerabilities that extend beyond individual performances.
Sunday's clash marked Inter Miami's fifth match at Nu Stadium since its grand opening, with the Herons previously enduring a frustrating stretch of three draws and a loss at the new venue. The inability to secure victories at their new home venue had become a concerning pattern, particularly given the expectations surrounding the team's profile.
The familiar singing, cheering, flag waving and drum beating from Inter Miami's organized supporters' groups "La Familia" were absent until late in the match. The groups reportedly are upset that the players have not acknowledged their presence in the new stadium and remained silent as a form of protest before they began singing in the 85th minute.
Messi has undoubtedly been Inter Miami's talisman since his arrival, serving as both the team's primary finisher and the creative engine behind their build-up play. The dual role places enormous creative and finishing responsibility on a single player, limiting tactical flexibility.
In the 31st minute, Messi controlled a pass from Telasco Segovia and quickly found Luis Suarez, who immediately linked back up with the Venezuelan midfielder. In the 42nd minute, Messi executed a perfect give-and-go with Suarez before dancing past Cole Bassett and Diego Chara inside the box. After freezing the defenders, the Argentine slipped a pass across the face of the goal for Berterame to tap home first-time.
Most notably, the superstar has racked up four goals and four assists over his last four outings, solidifying his status as the frontrunner for the MLS Player of the Month award for May. While this production masks underlying issues, it also reinforces the team's structural dependence.
The victory provides temporary relief, but the fundamental challenge remains: Inter Miami has constructed a system that requires exceptional individual performance rather than collective efficiency. This approach creates sustainability questions as the team progresses through the season and prepares for playoff scenarios where tactical adaptability becomes crucial.
