Mestalla turned on Valencia, with supporters voicing fury at the hierarchy and the squad before the meeting with Elche, as whistles greeted the players.

According to Superdeporte, the stadium filled later than usual as hundreds gathered on Avenida de Suecia minutes before kick-off to protest against the club’s management, displaying banners and calling for Peter Lim to leave, more than a decade after his purchase of shares, from supporters desperate to see the club back where they feel it belongs.

Anger at the board has run alongside criticism of the players and coaching staff. Last week, after the humiliation in Vigo, the team arrived back in the city to hear Valencia fans demand far more.

Corberán, in particular, was targeted by chants urging him to go.

On Saturday, at least in the final moments before kick-off, the mood was much the same. While opinions in the stands varied, most greeted Valencia’s players with whistles, and the jeers were louder for the hosts’ entrance than for Elche’s.
