The Mexican National Team continues to write unforgettable chapters at the FIFA World Cup 2026. Backed by the unwavering support of the home crowd at Estadio Ciudad de México, El Tri booked its place in the Round of 16 with an outstanding 2-0 victory over Ecuador.

With three Chivas players in the starting lineup—'Tala' Rangel, Luis Romo, and 'Piojo' Alvarado—Javier Aguirre's side fought for every inch of the pitch. Each Guadalajara player played a vital role in securing this historic victory for Mexico.

One of the standout performers was Roberto Alvarado, who constantly created danger from the right flank. By drifting into central areas, he combined effectively with Mora, Jiménez, and Julián Quiñones to orchestrate Mexico's attack. It was Alvarado who set up the opening goal, delivering a perfectly weighted pass behind Ecuador's back line for Quiñones, who finished emphatically into the near corner.

Meanwhile, Raúl Rangel was instrumental in preserving Mexico's clean sheet. Whenever Ecuador threatened to respond, the Tri goalkeeper came up with outstanding saves, displayed exceptional reading of the game, and used his distribution to help Mexico build from the back. Under pressure, 'Tala' stood tall, showing the composure required at the highest level.

Luis Romo once again proved why he is a true box-to-box midfielder. Wearing Mexico's No. 7, he made his presence felt in both penalty areas, constantly pressing, linking up with teammates, and wearing down the opposition throughout the match.

In the second half, Brian Gutiérrez came off the bench to bring fresh energy to midfield. The Chivas midfielder's contribution helped Mexico control possession, protect its lead, and see out the match against an Ecuadorian side that never found a way back into the contest.

El Tri now awaits its Round of 16 opponent, with the match scheduled for Sunday, July 5, at Estadio Ciudad de México. Mexico's next rival will be the winner of the matchup between England and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
