Michael Carrick reveals one thing he really likes about Man Utd defender Kobbie Mainoo | OneFootball

Kobbie Mainoo’s fortunes at Manchester United have improved under interim manager Michael Carrick.

After being sidelined under previous boss Ruben Amorim, Carrick immediately restored him to the team after his appointment.

The 20-year-old repaid his faith by producing impressive performances in United’s victories against Arsenal and Manchester City. 

Speaking with Sky Sports ahead of Sunday’s game with Fulham, Carrick praised Mainoo.

“I like the way Kobbie takes the ball,” he said. “I think there’s a big part of being a footballer and being the top player is being able to cope with the environment.

“He’s come in at such a young age and played some big games for England and Manchester United. So just being able to cope, first off,  is a huge thing, and he’s proved he can cope.” 

Mainoo’s future in Manchester looked uncertain when he was struggling for game time under Amorim. 

It appeared he would push for an exit in January after being limited to substitute appearances in the English top-flight. 

Napoli and several other European clubs were interested, but United had no intention to part ways with him. 

Mainoo’s fortunes have improved since Amorim was sacked after a breakdown in relations with the club’s hierarchy. 

Carrick clearly rates him very highly, and the midfielder is expected to play against Fulham.  

Mainoo is contracted with United until 2027, with the club having an option to extend it by another year. 

But the Red Devils are keen to reopen contract talks to tie him down to a new deal. 

Mainoo’s salary is among the smallest of all the members of the first-team squad, and the club are prepared to offer a new contract that would bring him into line with his teammates.
