Raised in Glasgow, Michael was once one of the most sought after youngsters in the game. He even knocked back the all star Alex Ferguson Manchester United side to sign professional for Celtic at the age of 15, leading to him being paraded before a large crowd at Celtic Park in 2002.

That was in a big way down to the influence of Martin O’Neill, with even the late Tommy Burns showing up at his house complete with a bouquet of flowers for his mother in a bid to win him and his family over.

Martin even handed Michael his debut at the age of just 15 in a friendly with Wycombe Wanderers, making him the youngest ever player to don the hoops at first team level, proving how much he was regarded at the club.

Many who coached or played alongside the talented midfielder believed he was destined for big things in the game, and the hype continued to grow, naturally increasing the expectations on the youngster.

Michael would make his senior debut for the club in 2005, appearing as a substitute against Livingston and almost made himself an instant hero, but unfortunately spurned a wonderful chance to score and make it a memorable debut.

Time was on his side, but unfortunately that would prove to be Michael’s one and only appearance for the club as he failed to live up to his early promise.

After a loan spell at Dunfermline, Michael was released by the club in 2009, and decided to peruse his career on the other side of the world as he decided to sign for Australian A league side Central Coast Mariners after a successful trial.

Michael would head back to Scotland for a spell with Motherwell, before having having a short spell in Japan, a four year stint in New Zealand with Wellington Phoenix, and another spell in Oz with Central Coast Mariners, before ending his career in Scotland with Queen’s Park and Clyde.

Despite representing Scotland at youth level, Michael earned 55 caps for the country of his birth New Zealand, and was named in the all whites 23 man squad for the 2010 World Cup Finals in South Africa.

Michael still had a decent career in the game, but unfortunately couldn’t live up to the much publicised early hype and expectations at Celtic.
