Micky van de Ven believes Tottenham can still achieve special things this season, despite their dire league position.

The Dutch defender returned in Tottenham’s Europa League victory over Elfsborg on Thursday, his first appearance since the defeat to Chelsea at the start of December.

Victory in Europe sealed Spurs automatic qualification to the round of 16 in the Europa League, with huge cup matches against Liverpool and Aston Villa on the horizon.

Van de Ven has been watching on frustratedly as Tottenham continue to struggle in the Premier League, though, with Ange Postecoglou’s side 15th.

However, ahead of the trip to Brentford, Van de Ven is confident Spurs can end their trophy drought with so much still up for grabs.

“[The Europa League] it’s a competition where we can win the title,” he stated.

“We have an unbelievable team, of course we have a lot of injuries at the moment but the guys are coming back now and we don’t have to play the next round [play offs] now.

“We’re straight into the round of 16. It’s good for us so that players can come back but Sunday we have the Premier League coming and we need to do well there also.”

Van de Ven is one of several key players expected to return in the coming weeks for Tottenham, with manager Postecoglou forced to rely heavily on youngsters to fill the void left by the incessant injury crisis.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling to be back out there,” Van de Ven continued.

“You see every day, every training session they [the young players] work so hard and give 100% day in and day out.

“It’s been really tough [to watch from the sidelines]. You always want to go out there, you always want to play and you always want to help the team.

“It was a really tough period to be out for a long time.

“You always want to help the team, you always want to support them also when we have tough times. Now I’m back so hopefully we can go in the right way now from today.”
