Middlesbrough close to signing Manchester City midfielder Sverre Nypan on loan - potential Hackney implications
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
It has been reported via the Yorkshire Post that Middlesborough are close to signing the talented Manchester City youngster Sverre Nypan on loan, which has brought much excitement to Boro fans.
The 18-year-old joined Premier League Giants, City, in June for a fee of £12.5m and has been labeled as an exciting prospect since arriving from Norwegian side Rosenborg, to which Nypan is a native.
After seeking to impress in his homeland, first bursting onto the scene at 16 years of age, Nypan earned his move to England and could gain vital experience playing in the Championship next season having been linked with a move to the Riverside.
With Nypan only being a teenager, he could offer the Boro side a sense of dynamism in the heart of the midfield as well as goal contributions.
The young Norwegian had an impressive 2024 campaign with Rosenborg where he clocked up eight goals and seven assists in 28 league appearances. Numbers that we could well see Nypan put up in the Championship.
When asked about the potential signing of Man City's Nypan, Football League World's Middlesborough fan pundit, Liam Day, had high hopes for the youngster, but not for the reason you may think.
"It's one of the most exciting signings I think I've seen at Boro simply because of Football Manager!" Liam told FLW.
"I've used him a lot, and he seems to be class, and you look at his highlights in real life, and he does look class.
"Technically he looks unbelievable, and I am very, very excited by this signing."
However, with a lack of playing time at the top-level, it may take time for Nypan to settle into life in England and especially the fierce nature of the Championship. His raw and exciting style of play is one thing to get Boro fans out of their seats, but he is certainly a work in progress.
"My main concern for him is how will he adapt to Championship football? Because he does look like he needs to improve physically, but that comes with age as he's so very, very young," Liam added.
Nyman's imminent arrival may have an impact on what hapepned to Hayden Hackney in the final two weeks of the transfer window.
Hackney has been a staple in the Boro side throughout his fresh career, having made his first senior appearance for the club in the 2021/22 season.
The 23-year-old, over the course of his time at the Riverside, has won the hearts of Boro fans, who consider Hackney to be one of their own.
Despite continuing to shine, as highlighted by grabbing a goal in their 0-3 away win over Millwall on Saturday, the potential arrival of Nypan could spell danger for Hackney if the club decide to cash in on him.
FLW's Middlesbrough fan pundit, Day, added, "The implications of Hackney though, in all honesty, if it means Hackney moves on, or we've already got a replacement that's good enough to start and play in this team, I wouldn't be against it.
"We desperately need a full squad improvement and Hackney money will allow us to bring in high-quality players."
"I feel like it would make sense to do that now, seen as he's only got two years left, because next year you're going to get a smaller fee, probably at least half of what you could get this year.
