Middlesbrough have allowed head coach Rob Edwards to hold talks with Wolves about their vacant managerial role.
Boro had previously turned down Wolves’ initial approach for Edwards who played at Molineux for four years and served briefly as interim coach in 2016. But Wolves have persisted, prompting Middlesbrough to step aside and let discussions take place.
Edwards, who has also managed Watford and Luton Town, missed Friday’s training and will not be in charge for Saturday’s Championship clash with Birmingham City. Adrian Viveash and Harry Watling will lead the team in his absence.
Having signed a contract until June 2028, any move would require compensation, which Middlesbrough are expected to seek in full.
Boro sit third in the Championship, just outside the automatic promotion spots.
Wolves are looking for a replacement after Vitor Pereira was dismissed just 45 days into a three-year deal following a 14-match winless run.
Under-21s coach James Collins and Under-18s boss Richard Walker are temporarily in charge as the club searches for a permanent appointment ahead of their trip to Chelsea on Saturday.
