The Teesside outfit have submitted a bid for Morgan Whittaker that the Pilgrims have decided to accept.
Middlesbrough have had an improved bid accepted for Plymouth Argyle winger Morgan Whittaker.
Alan Nixon believes Boro have accepted an offer of £6m, with the deal also including extras for the Pilgrims.
Whittaker, 24, has been the subject of interest from numerous clubs in recent weeks, with Burnley also being linked with a move for the wide player.
The Clarets have even launched a couple of bids for the ex-Swansea City man during this window, but Boro have made a significant breakthrough in talks and could now win the race for his signature, having submitted an acceptable offer for Whittaker.
The winger was missing from Plymouth's matchday squad against the Clarets in midweek - and with manager Miron Muslic revealing that the player failed to show up in time for the game - that only helped to increase speculation about his future at Home Park.
Whittaker has been one of the first names on the teamsheet and has impressed during both his loan and permanent spells in Devon, playing a key part in keeping the club afloat in the Championship at the end of last term.
But he risks tarnishing his legacy at Home Park following his failure to show up in time for an important game in midweek, with the Pilgrims going on to lose that game 5-0.
Nixon first revealed the news that Boro have had a bid accepted for Whittaker.
Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie also believes the Teesside club is set to fork out £6m, with a further £2m potentially set to follow in add-ons.
The player will travel to Boro this weekend to undergo a medical and put pen to paper on his deal at the Riverside. However, it remains to be seen whether the Clarets will swoop in and try to hijack this deal.
Whittaker could be a very exciting addition, considering he has played alongside Finn Azaz before.
Azaz should help him to settle in quickly - and a front four of Emmanuel Latte Lath, Azaz, Whittaker and Ben Doak will scare any defence in the Championship.
It's a shame that Latte Lath may not be at the club for much longer - because that front four could take Boro to the Premier League.
Carrick's side also look set to secure the signature of George Edmundson.
He performed well during his loan spell at the Riverside - and could be a very shrewd permanent signing at the back.
