Mikel Arteta says the next step for Noni Madueke is to become more consistent, after the winger scored twice to help the Gunners beat Club Brugge in the Champions League.
Madueke’s two goals followed by a Gabriel Martinelli strike have all but confirmed Arsenal’s place in the knockout stages of the competition.
Arteta praised Madueke’s impact but with fierce competition in the squad, the Gunners boss says high standards are required if he is to keep his place.
“He’s maintaining the level,” Arteta said when asked about Madueke competing for a place with Bukayo Saka.
“They both have different qualities as well.
“It’s great, because we are going to need them. We’re playing every three days and (we need) players with that freshness and that bite as well. Understanding that they have to perform at that level and this is the standards that we set. It’s something really good.
“It’s about consistency. When any player plays, and in the middle we have the same example, we need to have those standards and consistency.
“It’s not one game. It’s two games, three games. Can you do it ten games in a row every three days? That is the level that we have to hit.”
Asked if he has spoken to Madueke about that, Arteta said: “Yeah. And (about being consistent) in ten consecutive actions.
“That’s the level in the game. In every single action. That’s the challenge for him.”
