The Gunners’ first-choice goalkeeper was ruled out of Wednesday’s Champions League meeting with Girona despite training in the build-up to the game and travelling to Spain, with Arteta revealing before the game that he was “not fit”.

Arteta refused to reveal exactly what Raya’s injury was after that 2-1 win, but confirmed on Friday afternoon that it is a muscular issue.

Arsenal are now sweating on if the 29-year-old will be ready to face City at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, while the game will definitely come too soon for Ben White, who remains out along with Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus and Takehiro Tomiyasu.

“We are still uncertain,” Arteta said on Raya on Friday. “We have another session tomorrow, another 48 hours, so we have to wait and see. It’s a muscular issue, so we have to wait and see.

“Ben is definitely out, he hasn’t trained with us yet, so he’s not going to be available. No others [injuries] from the game against Girona.”

If Raya is out, then deputy Neto will be primed to make his Premier League debut for Arsenal against City.

The Brazilian, who joined the Gunners on loan from Bournemouth last summer, made his full debut on Wednesday in Girona.

Neto put in a shaky performance and was at fault for Girona’s opening goal, which was scored by former Tottenham winger Arnaut Danjuma.

He did recover after that and was steady in the second half, with Arteta defending his performance.

“I’m very happy first of all that he played,” he said. “It’s been seven months since he played his last match and it’s not easy, so very happy that he played and we won the game.”
