Mikel Merino and Martin Zubimendi have been reunited at Arsenal, 12 months after they played together in the midfield at Real Sociedad. The two Spaniards shared the same central role in La Liga, and their reunion at the Emirates is set to be an exciting development for both players and supporters.
While Merino played predominantly as a striker last season due to injuries among Arsenal’s forward players, breaking into the midfield this term may prove more challenging for him. Zubimendi, however, has joined the squad at a time when Arsenal have experienced departures in central midfield, with Jorginho and Thomas Partey having left the club. This situation means he is expected to feature regularly, starting games unless unavailable due to injury or suspension. He already began in their match against Manchester United, signalling his immediate importance to the team.
When Merino moved to Arsenal, Zubimendi had the opportunity to make the switch to the Premier League a year earlier, with Liverpool reportedly willing to meet his release clause. He chose to remain at Real Sociedad at that time but eventually accepted Arsenal’s offer. There has been speculation that Merino may have played a role in persuading his former teammate to join him, but Merino has clarified his position on the matter.
Speaking to Diario Vasco, Merino said:
“Leaving Real Sociedad is a very hard step; it was already hard for me to make that decision, and I imagine it’s even harder for him, being from there.
“I didn’t try to convince him out of respect for him and Real Sociedad, nor did I pressure him to come. He did what came from his heart.”

Zubimendi’s arrival strengthens Arsenal’s midfield options at a crucial time. The combination of his talent and Merino’s experience is expected to provide stability and creativity in central areas. While Merino may face competition for regular midfield starts, the reunion offers the potential for strong partnerships and tactical flexibility within the squad.
For supporters, seeing two familiar La Liga teammates working together in the Premier League is an intriguing prospect. Arsenal’s recruitment strategy has clearly focused on bringing in players who can contribute immediately while also complementing existing squad members, and Zubimendi’s addition exemplifies this approach. The club and fans alike will be eager to see how the partnership develops throughout the season.
