Mikel Oyarzabal follows Real Sociedad greats with World Cup brace | OneFootball

Mikel Oyarzabal struck twice in 151 seconds against Saudi Arabia at the World Cup, the crossbar then denying a hat-trick. According to Diario Vasco, he is following Real Sociedad greats who have scored on this stage, a feat they found special and valued more with time.

The first was López Ufarte on 16 June 1982, Spain’s opener against Honduras. A home win was expected, yet Héctor Zelaya beat Arconada early and Spain chased the game.

Past the hour, a foul on Saura brought a penalty that López Ufarte converted. He was the designated taker and calmly placed it by the post.

Four days later a second spot-kick against Yugoslavia ended differently. The keeper advanced, López Ufarte over-adjusted and missed, the referee ordered a retake and Juanito scored.

In the same tournament Jesús Zamora also scored in the second phase. Centre-back Gorriz scored at Italia 90.

After Germany and England drew 0-0, Spain faced West Germany at the Bernabéu. By 75 minutes the visitors led 2-0 through Littbarski and Fischer, then Zamora reduced the deficit.

He headed in a Tente Sánchez cross into Schumacher’s top corner. He later called it the best header of his career, it gave late hope but the defeat sealed elimination.

Decades on, another Guipuzcoan from Real, Oyarzabal, is enjoying his World Cup. Four Guipuzcoans from the club have scored at the tournament, and he is the only one to have done so more than once.
