Cagliari rally to stun Milan in six-goal thriller

Both sides’ fans were entertained on Saturday as Cagliari and Milan played out a 3-3 draw.

Despite sitting 16th in the table, the hosts opened the scoring in the blink of an eye. Nadir Zortea opened the scoring when he was left unmarked in the box and volleyed home a low drive beyond Mike Maignan.

But over time, one particular Milan star clicked into gear. After receiving heavy criticism, Rafael Leão responded with a brace on the night to put the visitors in front.

His first was an acrobatic finish from a ball over the top by Tijjani Reijnders. He then used his pace to beat José Luis Palomino and round goalkeeper Alen Sherri for another.

Cagliari would feel hard done by as VAR denied not one but two goals due to offside. But they carried their momentum into the second half and ensured Milan were put to the test.

Gabriele Zappa turned things all square when he beat Maignan at his near post, and all the visiting defence could do was watch the ball roll into the net.

This thriller (which featured 28 efforts combined) then saw Christian Pulisic drive forward and rifle a shot toward Alen Sherri. The goalkeeper’s save, however, didn’t beat Tammy Abraham who tapped home after 180 seconds on the pitch.

That wasn’t the final drama though, as Zappa was left unmarked at the top of the box and volleyed home an equaliser at the death.
