Milan Completed an Unprecedented Overhaul in the Summer

Milan underwent a proper revolution during the summer. Only nine players are left relative to the start of the 2024/2025 campaign: Mike Maignan, Luca Torriani, Fikayo Tomori, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Matteo Gabbia, Strahinja Pavlovic, Rafael Leao, Christian Pulisic, and Youssouf Fofana, Corriere dello Sport points out (via Tuttomercatoweb).

They didn’t keep any of their January additions but Santiago Gimenez, almost unwillingly. They have completed nearly 30 deals: 27 sales and 10 acquisitions, plus Alexis Saelemaekers’ return from loan.

Milan pulled off two of the three most expensive acquisitions in Serie A: Christopher Nkunku for €37M and Ardon Jashari for €36M. Only Juventus’ Lois Openda was pricier. They also opened their wallet for Samuele Ricci, Koni De Winter, Pervis Estupinan, Adrien Rabiot, and Zachary Athekame.

The Rossoneri shelled out €158M for their purchases but pocketed over €170M from their sales. They inserted Pierre Kalulu and Tijjani Reijnders’ ones in last season’s balance session. The income can grow significantly if three loanees wind up leaving permanently. Alex Jimenez could stay at Bournemouth for €18.5M, Yunus Musah at Atalanta for €26M, and Samuel Chukwueze at Fulham for €30M. There’s a conditioned obligation to buy only in the first case, while the others are simple options.

Our Take on the Milan Window

It’s hard to argue that they didn’t need an overhaul after what happened last season. The pace of their summer is one of the biggest reservations. They had a flurry of deals early and late and a big lull in the middle that they could have used better. They have gone beyond their comfort zone with the fees for some signings that aren’t exactly foolproof. They better nail those, as they could have used some upgrades in different roles.
