Milan Mayor Beppe Sala feels that the change in venue for the 2027 Champions League final from the San Siro was “inevitable” with the plans of Inter Milan and AC Milan.

Speaking on the sidelines of an event hosted by Milan-based newspaper Il Giornale, via FCInterNews, the Mayor gave his thoughts on the showpiece occasion changing venue.

Now it’s official. The final of the 2026-27 edition of the Champions League will not take place at the San Siro.

The plan had long been for the iconic stadium to host the fixture.

However, there has been a lot of uncertainty around the future of the San Siro.

This is the result of Inter and Milan’s long-term plans to try and build a new stadium.

The Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri had long been attempting to secure approval to tear down the San Siro and build a new stadium to replace it.

However, after these plans proved impossible, the clubs reoriented. They have been working on plans in the greater metropolitan area of Milan.

Milan Mayor Sala has made a last-ditch attempt to keep the clubs at the San Siro, however.

He has tried to convince Inter and Milan that renovations to the San Siro would meet their financial needs.

Sala: “Champions League Final Venue Change Inevitable With Inter & AC Milan Plans”

Inter and Milan have rejected Sala’s idea of their staying in a renovated San Siro.

However, there is still the possibility that the two clubs could build a new stadium adjacent to the existing stadium.

Therefore, there is still a lot of uncertainty about what exactly the status of the San Siro will be in a few years’ time.

Therefore, UEFA have made the decision to move the final of the 2026-27 Champions League from the iconic stadium.

“I spoke with UEFA about it,” said Milan Mayor Sala. “Because they’ve asked for guarantees that there won’t be any construction underway in the San Siro area.”

“How can I give it?” the Mayor posed.

“Pragmatically, it couldn’t be done any differently.”

“Unless someone takes the responsibility to say that there won’t be any work in the area,” Sala said.

The Milan Mayor noted, “This would reverse the path we’re taking with Inter and Milan.”

“Everything will depend on the path that we go on with the team. That’s what we’re working on.”
