Milan stars Mike Maignan and Luka Modric were very critical of the Roma penalty in their 1-1 draw at the Stadio Olimpico. ‘I don’t think they would’ve scored’ without it.
The goalkeeper really does raise his game when facing the Giallorossi, as his series of saves at San Siro helped secure the 1-0 victory in November 2025.
That included parrying a Paulo Dybala penalty, but this time Lorenzo Pellegrini just about managed to put the spot-kick past his fingertips for a 1-1 draw, cancelling out the Koni De Winter opener.

“We came here for the three points,” Serie A Man of the Match Maignan told DAZN Italia.
“Roma are a very difficult team to play against, especially on their own turf. We had the chances to score a second goal, it’s a pity we didn’t do more to bring home the full result.
“It’s also a pity that we conceded on that penalty that I don’t want to comment on. It’s in the past now. What is Bartesaghi meant to do, cut his arms off? The ball is knocked onto his arm. They could even have given another on Pulisic.”
Davide Bartesaghi’s arm was outstretched when Zeki Celik’s knockback struck it, whereas Pulisic’s arm was hanging limply by his side on the second appeal from Wesley.
“There are many strong teams in Italy challenging for the top spots, we know every point matters. We play every game looking to win and want to continue our journey.”

This result means Milan remain in second place, but are now five points adrift of leaders Inter, opening up a four-point advantage over both Roma and Napoli in joint third.
The more important concern is looking over their shoulders in the fight for a Champions League spot, as Juventus are five points behind and Como seven.
“I think we started the game well for 15-20 minutes, then Roma started dominating the game and Mike was saving us, but we managed to survive the first half,” confessed Modric to DAZN Italia.
“The second half was much better, we created chances and without this unlucky penalty that wasn’t a penalty, I don’t think they would’ve scored a goal.”

Milan are now unbeaten in 21 Serie A rounds, since the opening weekend defeat to Cremonese in August 2025, the longest positive streak in Europe’s top five leagues this season.
“We are still continuing without losing, it’s a positive thing, but we are unhappy we couldn’t manage to stay 1-0 up. We are looking forward to the next match,” concluded Modric.
