There was a mixed atmosphere at San Siro during this evening’s Serie A match against Udinese, as while it was close to sold out, the Milan ultras staged a silent protest.

The Rossoneri returned to the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza following the break for international duty and the 2-1 defeat to Fiorentina.

Fans rushed to the stadium despite their worst start to a Serie A season in a decade, as 71,214 were in attendance.

However, it was a far quieter atmosphere than usual because the ultras in the Curva Sud decided to sit in silence and not make any chants.

This was part of a wider protest against the investigation that has seen several of their members arrested and others banned from the stands.

The investigation currently covers both Milan and Inter ultras, with a series of interviews after players and coaches were in contact with some of those who were arrested.

The clubs are being urged to cut ties with the fans in the Curva, especially those who use their presence in the stands to work with organised crime to run lucrative business practices.
