This is our sixth feature on moves the shook the MLS.

Zlatan Ibrahimović’s arrival in Major League Soccer (MLS) in 2018 was nothing short of spectacular. The Swedish striker, known for his larger-than-life personality and jaw-dropping goals, joined LA Galaxy and instantly became one of the league’s most iconic figures.

Making an Explosive Entrance

Zlatan wasted no time making his mark in MLS. In his debut match against local rivals LAFC he scored twice, including a 40-yard volley that stunned fans and announced his arrival in style. Although his signing did little to assuage the world’s perception that the MLS was a league for player’s “past their prime” (he was nearly 35), his obvious passion for the game and exceptional skill showed he was still a prime-time player.

Impact on LA Galaxy and MLS

Ibrahimović’s tenure with LA Galaxy boosted the team’s already high profile (this was the club that had signed Becks). It also attracted global media attention to the league. His charismatic (some might say arrogant) presence, backed up by phenomenal goal-scoring prowess, transformed LA Galaxy matches into must-watch events. Zlatan scored 52 goals in 56 appearances, an average of a goal every 91 minutes, leaving a trail of unforgettable moments.

Clutch vs. LAFC

Zlatan’s performances during the “El Tráfico” derbies became legendary. He faced LAFC five times during the Galaxy career, scoring 8 times and getting 1 assist. Although he would come in second behind LAFC’s Carlos Vela in the 2019 Golden Boot race (Zlatan had 30; Vela 34), fans could count on him to bring his all and leave everything on the pitch.

Overcoming Challenges

Despite his individual success, Zlatan’s MLS journey wasn’t the smoothest. LA Galaxy struggled defensively, missing the playoffs his first year (2018), and failed to LAFC in the Conference semifinals in 2019. His individual brilliance certainly kept the Galaxy competitive, but couldn’t gloss over the other issues the club was experiencing.

Zlatan’s Legacy in MLS

Ibrahimović left MLS in 2019, but his impact remains indelible. His unforgettable performances helped boost the league’s visibility, inspiring future stars to consider MLS as a viable destination. Zlatan’s time in America reinforced his reputation as one of football’s greatest showmen.
