Whilst Benjamin Pavard will rightly come in for criticism for the way that he presented the ball to Folarin Balogun, it wasn’t as if the USMNT forward had an empty net to aim at.

Balogun still had to beat CJ Egan-Riley, which he did (with the England youth international injuring his thigh in the process), and then pull off one of the most sumptuous and well-placed lobs. Geronimo Rulli stood no chance of stopping the effort, which extended AS Monaco’s lead over Olympique de Marseille to two goals.

The Principality club would see out the win 2-1. “The best goal of my career? It was one of the best. The importance of the goal is what makes it special,” added the former Arsenal forward in a mixed zone interview attended by Get French Football News.

His manager, Sébastien Pocognoli, added, “When you see the angle, you say, ‘Give it a go!’ but this ‘Have a go!’ was much more than I could have hoped for in terms of decision-making. It is a magnificent goal. You could say that he did it all on his own.”
