Vincenzo Montella has ruled out resigning as Türkiye head coach after an early World Cup exit. According to Superdeporte, Türkiye face the United States on Thursday in their final group match, already unable to reach the round of 32.
Speaking before that game, he said he would not step down, insisting he still has energy and passion. He added that anyone calling for his resignation would have to accept his stance.
The Italian has led the team since 2023 and guided Türkiye to a first World Cup since 2002 in Korea and Japan. Defeats to Australia 2-0 and Paraguay 1-0 ended their hopes of progression.
Montella argued no Türkiye coach had previously taken the side to both the Euros, where they reached the quarter-finals in 2024, and the World Cup. He said he has the backing of the federation president and the players, criticised personal attacks in Turkish media, and urged journalists not to tear everything down.
He condemned an incident at the team hotel on Tuesday, when three or four people insulted the squad, which sparked a furore on social media, while noting around 50 others showed support. He stressed it had been 24 years since their last World Cup and called for unity.
