José Mourinho’s Benfica remain unbeaten in the league, yet a trophy-less season now looms and frustration around the club persists.

According to Al-Sharq, Benfica have six matches left but sit third, seven points behind leaders Porto, which leaves the title a distant prospect. Mourinho’s side have 19 wins from 28 and nine draws, while Porto have lost only once, with 23 wins and four draws, and are closing on the championship.

Those nine stalemates, many in pivotal fixtures, are widely viewed as the decisive drag on Benfica’s title push.

Exits in the Champions League to Real Madrid, the Portuguese Cup to Porto and the League Cup to Braga left the league as their last route to silverware, which now looks improbable.

Mourinho risks a fourth consecutive season without a trophy, his last success coming with Roma in 2021-22 in the Europa Conference League. The Eagles could even complete the campaign unbeaten yet empty-handed.

There is precedent in Portugal, notably in 1977-78 when Benfica and Porto finished level on 51 points and Porto took the title on goal difference. Similar cases include Zamalek in 1980-81, Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ahli in 2014-2015, Türkiye’s Galatasaray in 1985-1986 and Italy’s Perugia in 1978-1979.
