Benfica prospect Gonçalo Moreira, 20, is pushing for a first-team chance under José Mourinho after a standout campaign with the B team. Record reports that his senior debut could still come this season, and that he is virtually assured of a place in the club’s 2026/27 pre-season.

Mourinho signalled in September that he rates the youngster, and has regularly involved him in first-team training.

Moreira is Benfica’s all-time leading scorer in the UEFA Youth League with 13 goals, a tally he can still add to with the team still in the competition. Diogo Gonçalves and José Gomes previously held the mark with 11. His scoring knack stands out for a player operating in midfield.

The coach has admitted he has a soft spot for Moreira and, in his third match since returning to Benfica, named him on the bench against Gil Vicente. He did not make his senior bow that day, but another call-up may follow.

This season he has played 31 official games, 20 in Segunda Liga, seven in the UEFA Youth League, three in the Premier League International Cup and one in Liga Revelação. Across 1,950 minutes he has 17 goals and 10 assists. He is valued at 1.2 million euros.
