Everton manager David Moyes has called on strikers Thierno Barry and Beto to contribute with more goals, after a mixed season for the duo.
Barry, a summer signing from Spanish club Villarreal, has only scored six times this season, and did not score his first goal for club until the 15th Premier League match of the campaign against Nottingham Forest, whilst Beto has only found the net four times.
Only four sides have scored less than Everton’s 32 league goals this campaign, with Tuesday’s opponents Burnley having scored the same amount.
Moyes says he needs more from his two forwards as his side continue their push for a European place.
“I think we need more goals from them,” Moyes said. “I want my centre forwards scoring far more goals, so for them to spread that number out is good in the last games.
“We’ve played 28 games now so we’re needing bigger returns from them. It’s been something we’ve missed all season, but getting three at the weekend was great for us, because it’s not something we’ve done too often.”
Everton sit eighth in the Premier League table, five points off Chelsea in sixth, having reached the 40 point mark after their 3-2 win against Newcastle on the weekend.
The Toffees have had much more success away from home, picking up seven wins on the road compared to just four at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Moyes put that contrast in results down to a variety of different reasons, which included injury issues and player availability during AFCON.
“I wouldn’t put it down to that [away tactics],” he said. “We try to play the game and how we see it. Certainly, in the home games we’ve tried to be on the front foot and be more aggressive and play better if we can.
“I think since we’ve got to December, picked up the injuries and the AFCON boys, we’ve found it difficult [at home].
“We’ve defended really well, certainly away from home. I think at home we’re a little bit more open, we’re trying to find ways of winning games and, in some ways, that’s cost us a little bit.”
