Everton narrowly lost 1-0 to Arsenal at the Hill Dickinson Stadium thanks to a massive error from centre-back Jake O’Brien.
The Everton ace was starting at right-back as is customary under David Moyes, but somehow forgot himself and handled the ball in his box.
Arsenal got a penalty, converted it, and held on to the lead till the end of the game, leaving the Toffees in tenth place on the Premier League table.
O’Brien is a centre-back by trade, but has been helping the club out at right-back.
However, he is currently costing Everton points, and Moyes should consider axing him.
The 24-year-old failed to win any of his attempted tackles, recorded a disappointing 19/27 completed passes (70% accuracy), and lost possession 15 times.
Only one of his four attempted long balls reached their target.
Moyes needs to give someone else a shot at right-back, with O’Brien currently looking like a fish out of water in the position.
He cannot afford to cost the Toffees more points.
Unfortunately, the Toffees aren’t exactly blessed with numerous options, and Moyes might be forced to wait until the winter transfer window to act.
Everton clearly need reinforcement for the right-back position and should be all over Bayern Munich’s Sacha Boey, who is reportedly available on the market.
He is surplus to requirements in Bavaria after failing to nail down a place in the starting XI, and Moyes could use his services in Merseyside.
Injuries have hampered his development, but Boey is still a ferocious, two-way right-back who can do a job for the Merseysiders, at least for the next six months.
His signing would allow O’Brien to return to his natural centre-back position.
Perhaps playing in his actual position will help him deliver better performances for the Merseyside club.
