FC Bayern is increasingly focusing on its young talent. While many clubs in Europe rely on expensive transfers, Munich has been growing a considerable equivalent value from its own training for years. A current evaluation now impressively underlines the importance of the Bayern campus in international comparison.
The evidence for this comes from the latest analysis by the CIES Football Observatory. In the survey on the aggregate transfer value of home-grown players still under contract, FC Bayern is ranked third worldwide with a total value of €284 million. Only FC Barcelona and Manchester City are ahead of the Munich club.
This puts the German record champions ahead of other European heavyweights, with clubs such as Real Madrid, Arsenal FC and Chelsea FC a long way behind. The study is based exclusively on players who spent at least three years between the ages of 15 and 21 in the respective youth academies and are currently still under contract – either with the club itself or on loan.
From Munich’s perspective, one name in particular stands out: Jamal Musiala. With an estimated individual value of 87 million euros, the attacking player is the most valuable Campus product in Bayern’s current balance sheet. A total of 16 home-grown players are included in the assessment, making the Campus a key economic factor in the squad structure.
The figures underline a development that has been promoted internally for years. Since the opening of the Campus in 2017, youth development work has been strategically linked more closely to the professional sector. The aim is not only to train talented players in sporting terms, but also to prepare them specifically for the transition – also with a view to market value and squad planning.
Internationally, it is clear how high the bar is set. At FC Barcelona, the transfer value of 22 home-grown players totals €738 million, driven by players such as Lamine Yamal and Alejandro Balde. Manchester City follows with €286 million, just ahead of Bayern. However, the gap to the rear is clear: fourth place, Real Madrid, comes in at €256 million.
The ranking is a clear signal for FC Bayern. The campus is not only one of Europe’s top clubs in sporting terms, but also economically. It remains to be seen which players will make the leap to the first team permanently in the future and which will confirm their market value elsewhere. With Lennart Karl, however, another home-grown player is currently on the rise.
